Introducing Taj Tayla: Christian Rap’s Newest Voice of Faith and Fire

For many artists, music begins as passion and later transforms into purpose. For Taj Tayla, the journey has been anything but linear. After initially recording music, stepping away, and then being called back, the return wasn’t about chasing streams or status, but about fulfilling a deeper mission and assignment.

Called Back to Create

“When I first stopped making music, it felt like something was missing,” Taj Tayla reflects. “There was a void. Most voids, the Lord will fill, but this was different. It wasn’t just about making music—it was about spreading the Gospel. Music just happened to be the most creative way I could do that.”

What might seem like just beats and bars to listeners is, for her, part of a greater mission. “I like to say I’m on a secret mission and music is just the disguise. It opens the door for the Holy Spirit to do the rest.”

Inspiration for the EP 'For All the Saints'

Taj Tayla’s forthcoming EP was born from real struggles—the kind that come when a person chooses to walk fully with Christ. “When you give your life to God, you face challenges: dependency, faithlessness, uncertainty. I was dealing with all of that,” she says. “This project is both a lament and a celebration of that journey. The world calls it ‘standing on business,’ but standing on the gospel comes with a price.”

The title and concept, she explains, are rooted in being transparent about the highs and lows of faith. “This EP is for all the saints—those navigating change, pain, growth, and the challenges of being set apart.”

Faith Over Numbers

One of the biggest challenges wasn’t creative—it was spiritual. Writing much of the project during a season of unemployment tested her trust in God. “I started my first track, 'Fig Tree Freestyle', on a lunch break at a temp job. A lot of the project came together in that season when I felt unseen, unheard, and unsure of my future.”

With little external validation, Taj had to anchor herself in obedience rather than numbers. “Making music with only five fans didn’t feel worth it. But God showed me obedience can’t be dependent on an audience.”

The Message in the Music

The goal isn’t to impress—it’s to impact. “I want listeners to see that you don’t have to rap about cars, clothes, drugs, or sex to create something meaningful. People don’t need more money or status; they need God. My music is my way of introducing people to that reality.”

Each track reflects a chapter of her spiritual walk. Songs like 'Back in Church' (did not make the final tracklist) mark her first church home, while 'Shanta's Prayer' encapsulates the difficulty—and the worth—of her journey. The closing track, 'Be Labor', honors her parents while expressing hope that the transformation God began in her will extend to them.

Balancing Creativity and Calling

The tension between artistry and ministry is ever-present. “Sometimes I just want to throw a bunch of scriptures on a track, but balance is key. My priority will always be biblical literacy—it’s the bread and butter of my music.”

That doesn’t mean the music is only for Christians. “I hope non-believers can enjoy it too. But at the end of the day, God is the ultimate creator. My job is to be faithful with what He’s given me.”

Standing Set Apart

In an industry that often blurs lines, being “set apart” means holding firm even when it costs opportunities. “Every door isn’t a Godly door,” Taj says plainly. “Obedience sometimes looks like saying no, even if it’s unpopular.”

Her artistry, in her own words, is “a reflection of who I am—I just happen to be a Jesus lover.”

Trusting the Process

Instead of chasing numbers or fame, her focus is staying faithful. “I don’t want to get lost in goals and lose sight of Jesus. For me, obedience means saying yes to God whether I have zero listeners or a million.”

The project has deepened her trust in God’s provision. “I used to think every door opened because I worked hard. Now I see God as the provider. His yoke is light. He makes the impossible possible.”

Even when doubt creeps in, she leans on Scripture and the support of friends. “Your identity will always be under attack, so you have to defend it with the Word of God. People change—God doesn’t. That loyalty is why I love Him.”

A Journey Still Unfolding

For Taj Tayla, this EP isn’t just music—it’s ministry. It’s a reminder that obedience matters more than popularity, that faith matters more than numbers, and that being set apart is worth the cost.

“I don’t know how far God will take this or whose life it will change. But I’ll never know unless I keep believing Jeremiah 29:11. That’s what keeps me going.”
